lucy-on-cassique

Lucy was brought up in London and though neither of her parents had an interest in horses, she spent much of her childhood riding in Norfolk.

She became involved in racing initially through riding and training point-to-pointers, which she combined with working for the BBC in London and, after moving to Newmarket, graduated from being a permit holder to a licence holder in 1997.

Lucy’s training career since then has been defined by a consistently good strike rate of winners to runners, enhanced by her ability to hold her own in the highest grade, all from just a fraction of the runners at the disposal of some of jump racing’s major yards.

Among the higher profile individuals to have emerged from her peaceful stables at Moulton Paddocks are the Grade 1-winning hurdler United, El Dancer, The Dark Lord and the Flat mares Cassique Lady and Enforce, both of whom have won stakes races, proving that their trainer is more than capable of preparing horses for either code.

Along with a dedicated team of staff led by head girl Sarah Nicholson, Lucy can also rely on the support and expertise of her husband Justin, a lifelong racing fan and fellow former point-to-point rider. A solicitor and consultant to the Newmarket-based Edmondson Hall practice, Justin is also a director of the British Horseracing Authority and council member for the Racehorse Owners’ Association. His knowledge of bloodstock through time spent with Darley Stud and David Minton is invaluable in assisting Lucy in buying horses.

Lucy and Justin have three daughters – Rosie, Mimi and India – all of whom ride and take an active role in the yard when college and schoolwork allow.
